A New Chapter Begins for Chaleur Regional Hospital with the Inauguration of Its New Wing
Bathurst, Tuesday, October 13, 2026 – Vitalité Health Network officially inaugurated the new wing of Chaleur Regional Hospital today, in the presence of the Premier of New Brunswick, the Minister of Health, several local elected officials and numerous community members who gathered to mark this significant milestone for the region.
Long awaited by the community, this expansion, made possible through a major investment by the Government of New Brunswick, represents a significant step forward in modernizing the facility. The strong community turnout at the ceremony reflects the importance of this project to the region and the pride residents take in their hospital.
Many services will benefit from new facilities, including acute care, surgery, oncology, renal health, palliative care and rehabilitation. These new facilities will provide patients with a more comfortable environment that better meets their needs, while also improving working conditions for health care teams.
“This inauguration marks a major investment in the quality of care and the future of health services throughout the Chaleur region. We are proud to offer our patients facilities that meet their needs and to provide our teams with a modern environment where they can work under better conditions. This is the result of years of hard work and an achievement that the entire region can be proud of,” said Dr. France Desrosiers, President and CEO of Vitalité Health Network.
Clinical Spaces Redesigned Around Patient Needs
One of the most significant improvements involves the inpatient units. The new units will feature private and semi-private rooms, all equipped with private bathrooms. These new spaces will offer greater privacy, peace and comfort for patients and their loved ones, while also supporting infection prevention and control.
The facilities will also be better suited to people with reduced mobility and will provide health care teams with the space they need to use modern medical equipment and deliver care safely.
Several clinical areas will also benefit from spaces better suited to their activities. In oncology and renal health, the new facilities will improve the environment in which patients are welcomed and treated. The addition of rooms dedicated to ambulatory procedures will also allow certain minor procedures to be performed outside the operating room. This new arrangement will help optimize the use of operating rooms and improve patient flow.
“By investing in state-of-the-art facilities, we are doing more than improving access to care: we are also creating spaces that support the extraordinary people who dedicate their lives to caring for others,” said Premier Susan Holt. “At the heart of projects like this are people: patients, their families and health care professionals. Our goal is to provide them with the facilities and resources they need, both today and in the future.”
A Modernized Work Environment
The project will also provide staff with more functional, better organized workspaces designed to meet the demands of modern hospital care.
The new facilities will include adequate storage areas for medical equipment, more spacious patient rooms and layouts that make it easier for health care teams to move around and carry out their work. Reception, admissions, the cafeteria and several administrative areas will also benefit from modernized facilities, helping create a more welcoming environment for patients, visitors and staff.
A Phased Opening to Ensure Continuity of Care
The official inauguration is part of a phased approach to bringing the new expansion into service. Since September 22, the main entrance and several services, including reception, admissions and blood collection, have already been welcoming patients and visitors in their new locations.

Other services, including oncology, renal health, outpatient clinics and inpatient units, will gradually move into their new spaces throughout the fall and winter of 2026. These moves will take place in stages to ensure the safety of patients and staff, as well as continuity of care and services.
The modernization of Chaleur Regional Hospital will continue beyond this inauguration, notably through renovations to sections of the existing building and the planned expansion of the Mother/Child unit.
The successful completion of this project is the result of the dedication of many individuals, from the teams involved in its planning to the professionals who will support the transition to the new facilities. Vitalité Health Network would also like to recognize the contributions of its partners, particularly the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation, whose support for equipment purchases helps improve the care provided to the community.
The public is invited to visit the project webpage to stay informed about the next phases of the opening.
